Still here…

Hey all.  Just wanted to let you know that I’m still here.  Last week was homecoming week which has kept me extremely busy.  I’ll come back with some juicy updates soon.  Ok, it’s not really that juicy.  Honestly, it’s rather dry.  Yes, I know I’m dull.  I’m ok with that.  More to come soon…I promise.

Little Drummer Boy

This is a video of drummer Tony Royster Jr. At the time of this video he was 12 years old. I just have to say that this kid has got it going on. I think he may be in his early 20’s now…if that. Romack, are you watching? This kid has amazing control.

Batalla De Los Tambores

Roughly translated, battle of the drums. Actually, that might be the exact translation. This is one of the best drumming performances I have seen in quite a while. Justin, I think you would appreciate this. It truly is 8 minutes of drumming awesomeness. One is the drummer from the group Godsmack and I have no idea who the other one is. They are both really really good though. Enjoy!

Recovering…

So last week I was down with the flu.  The flu is not a fun thing to have.  It completely drains you of all your energy and leaves you feeling helpless.  I had to miss 2 days of work because of it.  I normally don’t ever stop working, but not last week.  I did however manage to make it to work by Wednesday when I felt I wasn’t contagious.  It also might have had something to do with Miss Texas 2007 being on campus.  Maybe just a little.  Actually, I was getting tired of…myself.  I spent those first 3 days curled up on the couch coughing and watching tv.  I was bored within the first 10 minutes.  Over a week has passed and while I’m mostly well, I’m still dealing with this lingering cough which is quite annoying.

I was surfing around the other day, before I was sick, and I came across a new song.  Actually, it was pointed out to me by a friend.  None the less, I stumbled upon and I want to share the lyrics with you.  I think a lot of people can identify with what this song is saying.  It’s written by a friend of mines friend named Josh Martin.

Impress You by Josh Martin

She calls out to me

But I’m not listening

She offers nothing

Yet it’s so tempting

See I’ve been down that road

Leaves me broken and alone

Yet I seem to find myself there again

And why do I

Do I what I despise and perform all the lies

That I suspect will impress you

He’s sees through us you know

And all our secrets are exposed

And it’s amazing that he still chose

To die for sins such as you and I

And why do I

Do I what I despise and perform all the lies

That I suspect will impress you

You’re impressed with your Son

Yes he’s the only one that brings us hope

And peace, and joy

And goodness and faithfulness

And kindness and gentleness

Holiness and righteousness and love…

Sweet love

How can we, hear your voice

If all we listen to is the culture

So why do I

Do I what I despise and perform all the lies

That I suspect will impress you

For me, it’s a simple question.  Why do I do the things that I despise?  Why do I think that I need to impress God?  Take a listen to it on Josh’s myspace.  It’s a really cool song.  Take a listen and tell me what you think.

Some easy reading…

I just happened upon this in my email today.  Thought I would share it with everyone else.  I grew up in a military family so I have great love, adoration and pride for those that choose to serve our country.

HERE ARE A FEW MILITARY COMEBACKS…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush.
He answered by saying, “Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.”  It became very quiet in the room.
There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break one of the French engineers came back into the room saying ‘Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?’
A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: ‘Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck.. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?’  Once again, dead silence.
A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, ‘Whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.’ He then asked, ‘Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?’
Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied ‘Maybe it’s because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn’t have to speak German.’  You could have heard a pin drop
AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE…
A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to France on a tour.
Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane.
At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on.
“You have been to France before, monsieur?” the customs officer asked sarcastically.
Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
“Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.”
The American said, “The last time I was here, I didn’t have to show it.”
“Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France !”
The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look.
Then he quietly explained.
“Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in ‘44 to help liberate this country, I couldn’t find any Frenchmen to show it to.”
Weekend of a Lifetime
This past weekend I had the opportunity to be a part of an organization a friend of mine created called LIFE (Leadership Is For Everyone).  I have to tell you that it was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my relatively short life.  I met so many amazing people that it really recharged my spirit!  Yes, it was that good.
Here is the mission and values of LIFE as written in their guide book:
The purpose of Leadership Is For Everyone, Inc. is to invest in tomorrow by building better leaders today.   We seek to serve our fellow men and women, especially young people, by modeling and teaching excellent leadership as a lifestyle.  We achieve our goals through conducting various leadership training seminars, workshops, and “Weekends of a Lifetime.”
It is our belief that every person can be a leader in our world, and when we all participate in life as leaders, our world is changed for the better.
In building character and leaders, we believe five leadership components must be cultivated and developed to successfully fulfill our mission.  All other components can be found embodied in these five tenets:
  1. Integrity:  Leaders must develop strong character and integrity, consistently doing what is right.
  2. Excellence:  Leaders must strive for excellence in all aspects of life: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
  3. Respect:  Each leader needs to cultivate respect, sensitivity, cooperation, and empathy toward all others regardless of color, race, religion, or beliefs.
  4. Balance:  All of us are a combination of a mind, body, heart and soul.  None of these aspects can be neglected.  When there is a balance of the mind, body, heart and soul, leaders are best able to manage  their lives enjoyably and successfully.  Daily discipline helps us exercise and improve our personal balance.
  5. People-centered:  Leaders must be people-centered, investing positively in the lives of others and the world in which they live.  It is our responsibility and privilege to help our fellow man.
We believe that each of us has a divine purpose for our lives.  Fulfillment and satisfaction come from working toward and achieving that purpose.
I am happy to announce that I was voted onto staff by the other staff members.  I am so excited about this opportunity I have to help make a difference in someone’s life.  We have another camp, Weekend of a Lifetime, the first weekend in February and I can’t wait for it to get here.  It was truly a unique atmosphere unlike any other I have experienced.  I will definitely keep y’all updated on my experiences as I continue to grow within this organization.
